A Perfect Afternoon Escape: Day Tripping from Venice to Boca Grande

Living in Venice, Florida means you’re never far from a hidden gem — and Boca Grande is one of those places that feels like a secret slice of paradise, just an hour south.

I recently took an easy afternoon drive down to Boca Grande, and I was reminded of why this quiet island on Gasparilla is such a beloved getaway for locals. The trip itself is part of the charm — winding along scenic roads, past palm-lined neighborhoods, glimpses of the Intracoastal, and little pockets of old Florida that still feel untouched.

Once you arrive, the vibe shifts immediately. Boca Grande is peaceful, charming, and oh-so-pretty, with golf carts humming along banyan-lined streets and historic buildings that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard. The Gasparilla Inn & Club gives the island its old-school elegance, while the lighthouse and beaches offer a sense of calm you just can’t find in busier beach towns.

We grabbed an iced coffee and a bite at one of the cozy local cafés, wandered through a few boutique shops, and ended the afternoon watching the water at the south end of the island where boats drift by and dolphins occasionally make an appearance.

Sunset at Bocahenge: A Photographer’s Dream

As golden hour approached, we headed to one of the island’s most quirky and photogenic landmarks — Bocahenge. It’s a whimsical, Florida-style homage to Stonehenge, made up of weathered concrete columns from the old phosphate dock. Set against the Gulf and silhouetted by the setting sun, it makes for a magical (and Instagram-worthy!) scene.

The light was perfect — soft pinks, oranges, and purples reflecting off the water, with the columns casting long, dramatic shadows across the sand. Whether you’re a professional photographer or just snapping with your phone, Bocahenge at sunset is a must-see. It’s peaceful, surreal, and a little mysterious — like Florida’s own ancient monument, if ancient meant mid-century industrial leftovers.

It’s these kinds of simple, beautiful afternoons that remind me why living in Venice is such a gift. You get all the comforts of home with spontaneous adventures like this just a short drive away.

Whether you’re already a resident or thinking about moving to the area, this part of Florida offers more than just great real estate — it offers a lifestyle that invites exploration, relaxation, and those “let’s take the scenic route” kind of moments.

Thinking of making a move to Venice or nearby? Let’s talk. I’d love to help you find your dream home — with stunning spots like Boca Grande just around the corner.
